“People – their faces – a reflection of their soul.” ~ Cherel Ito
Language was often a barrier in communicating verbally with people in many of the places where Cherel Ito traveled to, in her photographic journeys. Therefore, reading expressions on people’s faces, was important to Cherel as a photographer. In any country, a bright, wide smile always displays pleasure or a dream having been fulfilled.
Humor is unpredictable. What may be funny to one culture, may not be to another. How we as a people and as culture interpret text determines what we deem to be funny or not. Hidden meaning, underlying thoughts, suppositions, and surprise are all elements of possible humor.
Laughter has been proven to be therapy in any language. It boosts immune systems, relaxes muscles, reduces stress and blood pressure and it helps us to forget pain and sorrow.
Cherel Ito was a master at photographing people’s expressions all over the world. The National Museum of Women in the Arts, recognized that! And Cherel recognized that whatever was so funny to this Bolivian woman, must have felt good!
